This study does not label the movie theaters in Gyeongseong in the 1920s merely as “cinemas” but describes them as “performance venues,” where various performances took place. All kinds of performances were staged at these venues while the movie played, and involved benshi, singers, and an orchestra. Japan introduced the style of showing at performance venues, but it became popular in Gyeongseong because it allowed the Gyeongseong audience, which was familiar with traditional performances, to see movies in a manner similar to traditional styles.
The style of showing presented at performance venues were not fixed and homogeneous with regard to time and space. As this artistic style in early film history could exist in various forms, instead of being standardized or fixed as one form, it is likely that the style of showing and watching movies in colonial Joseon may have existed in diverse forms, varying according to the region and the quality of the theater. Therefore, this study divides movie theaters in Gyeongseong into those in Namchon and Bukchon and into premium and regular movie theaters, explaining the differences in the styles of presenting and viewing movies. The period under study was one in which film technology was introduced all over the world and a new form of modern theater was constructed in Gyeongseong. Thus, changes likely occurred in the style of presenting and viewing movies in the 1930s, since performance venues in the 1920s changed to movie theaters. Therefore, this study also examines the transformation process of the style of presenting and viewing movies.
