The Coming of the Holy Spirit at the day of Pentecost was the peculiar event which happened just once in history, and its redemptive meanings would never be found in any other events in history. But the powerful work of the Holy Spirit will continue even after the day of Pentecost.
The disciples of Christ received baptism by the Holy Spirit. But they could not experience the spiritual union with Christ, for Christ was not yet elevated into the rightside of the throne of the Father. So they had to receive baptism by the Holy Spirit once more at the day of Pentecost in order to be united spiritually with the elevated Christ. This peculiar experience of baptism happened only to the disciples who had to live in the transition period between the old covenant and the new covenant. All believers after the Pentecost are baptized by the Holy Spirit and united spiritually with the elevated Christ at the very moment when they repent and confess the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior.
The gifts of the Holy Spirit have been given to believers for the purpose of satisfying the historical needs in the redemtive-historical economy and the church’s implementing the duties given by God. Gifts of apostles, of prophets and of prophecies meaning special revelation ended immediately after the Scriptures had been written. The gift of tongue meaning foreign lanaguage was given to the disciples, but the gift of tongue meaning the special way of communication between God and believers has continued even after the Pentecost.
