In this work we seek answers for the questions such as, “What does the Torah say about Shalom?” and “According to the Torah, how can one enjoy the state of Shalom?” We will limit our research to the boundaries of Deuteronomy, since a study that takes full account of the whole Torah should be too vast. “Shalom” describes a state of no-war, a state of general happiness and peace, and a state where the curse of the covenant is absent. Shalom holds a meaning opposite to the curse and relates to the blessing.
The blessing in Deuteronomy chapter 28 is a state where no threat of war can be found and in which economic welfare is enjoyed. The offspring and the cattle thrive and there is an abundance of the harvest. This blessing specifies the state of Shalom. The victory at war is specifically emphasized. But the curse is the reverse of the blessing. The curse reverses the contents of the blessing and expands it in much more detail. Due to famine there is no grain in the fields and diseases break out. Enemies besiege the towns and there is no food to eat. Israel is expelled from Canaan and taken captive to foreign nations. The curse is the state of “no-peace(enshalom).”
Deuteronomy chapter 28 is in fact the conclusion of the Moab Covenant. The Moab Covenant encompasses all the coming generations of Israel. Israel’s future relies on the fact whether they follow the covenant or not. When Israel obeys the covenant, they enjoy the blessing. They will have “peace” in the land of Canaan. But when they disobey the covenant, a curse awaits them. They will not enjoy “peace” in the promised land. From this perspective, “Shalom” is the content of the covenant and the aim of Torah.
