A neighborhood unit is defined as a basic spatial area for allocating the facilities for public service in the field of urban planning. Recently, many plans focused on the neighborhood unit have been conducted. But the established criterion for the size of the neighborhood unit has not been made yet. It needs to be made the criterion from people’s actual movements. In this study, it can be drawn from the data of household travel diary survey focused on trips for work, school, shopping and leisure. Major results of the analysis are as follows. First, people move 700m on foot, 2km by bicycle and local bus, 5km by intra-city bus and passenger car, and 9km by subway. Second, according to the travel range, neighborhood unit can be classified into four sub-neighborhood units. Third, Seoul is divided in 52 small-sized neighborhood units, 10 middle-sized neighborhood units and 5 large-sized neighborhood units by the criterion and the number of arrival travels. It is needed to establish the criterion for the size of neighborhood unit through more studies with the actual people’s travel data.
