Although it has been already more than 10 years since the new millennium started, the prospect of Korean economy and industries still remains uncertain. This article examines the overall process of Korean industrial development and briefly discusses how the social role and identity of Korean engineers have changed over time. The crisis of Korean construction industry is not just a problem of a certain industry, but is linked with the issues of Korean society in general. This article addresses three issues on the innovation of engineering education to be considered in the time of transformation. First, the identity of Koran engineers needs to be re-established. In a new model of engineers, they should be able to define their own issues to be solved and create the game rules, not just to be fast followers or to answer the given problems. Second, engineers need to enhance their actual competence to combine moral imaginations with the engineering practice. They should combine the issues of ethics and morality with the core processes of engineering, not just considering them secondary issues. Third, engineers should be equipped with skills to understand and deal with the different cultures in the global society. This means that they should place a high value on the cultural and historical contexts and values of a certain society, rather than emphasizing the universal standards and rules. I believe that the top issue of engineering education in 2015 lies in how to start and realize the momentum that can turn crisis into opportunity.
