This study covers of excavated costume of somoja of the Joseon Dynasty. The finding of the study can be summarized as follows: It is known that somoja(小帽子) originated from China. Somoja has diverse shapes, as it is also referred to as somo(小帽), moja(帽子), or gamtu(坎頭), or yukammo(六合帽), as its most common shape features 6 linked triangular pieces. Somoja from excavated artifacts were found both in men’s and women’s tombs from the 15th to the 17th century, but disappeared in the 18th century and beyond. Somoja has 5 shapes. Silk fabrics such as silks and satins, and cottons, as well as woolen fabrics were used as materials. Some somoja were filled with cotton inside, and sometimes felt was also used. To summarize the findings that were arrived at by examining the cause of the transition in somoja through excavated artifacts, somoja for hereditary preservation as well as for empty space disappeared from men’s tombs in the middle of the 17th century, and instead manggeon(網巾) were used. It is surmised from the Joseon Dynasty literature that the main cause of the disappearance of somoja from preservation use stemmed from a transition in the social strata that used somoja. According to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, lower-level officials began to wear somoja in the late 16th century, and it seems that after this, the gentry ceased wearing somoja, following which somoja fell out of use even for hereditary preservation.
