The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of riding a unicycle on the isokinetic muscle strength of knees and ankles.
A total of 13 university students participated in this exercise for one hour, three times a week over a period of 12 weeks. Of the participants, seven students were in the experimental group, and remaining students were in the control group.
Data processing was performed via a two-way repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS with a set significance level of .05. The results of this study are as follows:
At angular velocities of 180 degrees/second, isokinetic muscle strength of knee flexion between the experimental and control groups showed a difference (p<.01) on their right knees, Also, the experimental group displayed a higher isokinetic strength than the control group by 24.5% (p<.01). At angular velocities of 30 degrees/second, isokinetic muscle strength of ankle inversion between the two groups showed a difference (p<.05) on their right ankles. Both groups displayed higher isokinetic strength: experimental group with an increase of 12.6% (p<.05) and control group with an increase of 23.9% (p<.05). On their left ankles, only the experimental group showed an increase of 20.9% (p<.05) in isokinetic muscle strength. At angular velocities of 120 degrees/second, isokinetic muscle strength of ankle inversion testing demonstrated an increase of 37.6% (p<.05) on the right ankles of the experimental group and an increase of 19.6% (p<.05) on the left ankles of the control group.
Based on the results above, unicycle exercise is considered to be effective in strengthening the isokinetic muscle strength of hamstring muscles of the knees and ankle inversion and therefore improving posture.
