This study aimed to assess the effects of an eight-week walking program on diagnosis factors of obesity and metabolic diseases and the interaction between those factors among housewives. The subjects of this study were 71 housewives who had no special experience regarding exercise and who had sedentary living habits. This study applied Equivalent Time Sample Design and an eight-week walking program (50 minutes/day, five days/week) to participants. In accordance with previous studies, this study selected the diagnosis factors of obesity (body weight, percentage of body fat, basic metabolic rate, waist circumference, body mass index) and metabolic diseases (total cholesterol, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, rest heart rate). Measurements before and after an eight-week walking program were performed. Following a 10-hour fast, a blood sampling was taken by venepuncture of the subjects. The results were as follows. First, walking significantly decreased the diagnosis factors of obesity, such as body weight, percentage of body fat, waist circumference, and body mass index in housewives. However, walking had no significant effects on the basic metabolic rate of participating subjects. Second, walking significantly reduced the diagnosis factors of metabolic diseases, such as systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, and blood glucose. Walking also significantly increased the activity of glutamic pyruvic transaminase. However, walking had no significant effects on total cholesterol and rest heart rate. Third, rest heart rate and blood glucose revealed low reliability concerning the diagnosis factors of metabolic disease in obese and healthy housewives. Fourth, waist circumference showed a high reliability in the diagnosis factors of both obesity and metabolic disease. Fifth, the desirable datum line of the central obesity in housewives, who were divided into "obese" by percentage of body fat and also divided into "overweight" by body mass index, was approximately 82cm in waist circumference. In summary, walking has some beneficial effects on the improvement of the diagnosis factors of obesity and metabolic diseases in housewives who have sedentary living habits. However, brisk walking accompanied by resistance training was necessary for increasing skeletal muscle and for stimulating pulmonary and cardiovascular systems. The major parts of the diagnosis factors of obesity and metabolic diseases measured in this study were in accordance with previous studies. However, waist circumference revealed a high reliability not only in the diagnosis factors of obesity, but also in the diagnosis factors of metabolic diseases. Thus, this study showed that, when we are looking for the treatment`s effects regarding the protection, diagnosis, and healing of obesity and metabolic diseases in housewives, it is necessary to examine closely the changing aspects of waist circumference. This study showed that there were some discordances in the classification results of overweight and obese housewives measured by percentage of body fat and by body mass index, and that these discordances were also related to waist circumference. Therefore, additional studies concerning the establishment of the relative classification criteria between percentage of body fat, body mass index, and waist circumference are necessary for improving public health.
