The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of suppressing arm swing and walking speed on the individual motion and inter-segmental coupling on the thigh, pelvis, and thorax motion in human walking. The subjects were selected 10 healthy college male students and 6 infra cameras were used for cinematograph. Walking speeds were determined with slow(2.8km/h), medium(3.6km/h) and fast(5.2km/h) speed with suppressing arm swing walking(SASW) and normal walking(NW) on treadmill. There was significant difference of stride length in the walking speeds, and the feature of the difference is that the stride length was increased with increasing walking speed. The magnitude of range of motion (RoM) showed various results in the segments with the walking patterns and walking speeds. The result of vector coding on pelvis-thorax showed the most typical pattern which in-phase of the coupling was decreased and out-of-phase of the coupling was increased simultaneously as the walking speed was increased. The percentage of coupling on pelvis-thorax in NW was lower than in SASW. Therefore arm swing led to increase the counter movement of pelvis-thorax with the increasing speed. The counter movement of pelvis-thorax was independent of the coupling on pelvis-thigh and thorax-thigh in walking.
