This paper intends to present a plausible answer to the questions about the paucity of Isaac materials and the reasons of his passivity. Furthermore, this paper also tries to clarify the function of the Isaac story in the book of Genesis and in the history of Israel. The possible existence of the Isaac story is strongly emphasized. To do so, here is adopted the canonical approach based on the literary and theological integrity of the book of Genesis. The Isaac story in Gen. 23:1-25:11 forms a unity focusing on the foretaste of the land promise and abundant blessings made possible by Abraham`s absolute obedience, which function to highlight a new beginning. Every condition drawn in this story is filled with realistic hope. The purchase of the small plot for a burial site is a foretaste of possessing the Promised Land (23:1-20). Especially, the marriage story of Isaac and Rebekah is intended to accentuate that they are substitutes, in the immediate context, for Abraham and Sarah as a new patriarch and a new matriarch respectively, and, in the broad context, for Adam and Eve as a newly created couple who brings a new faithful community into being. This is apparent in that not only is the story of their marriage (Gen. 24) surrounded with the death reports of Sarah and Abraham, but it is also full of creation imageries which occur in Gen. 1:1-2:4a and it is identical in theme and content with the marriage story of Adam and Eve in Gen. 2:4b-25. Thus in every respect, Isaac and Rebekah in the Promised Land are identified with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Their marriage secures the progeny for the future which inherits and extends the Abrahamic blessings and treasures the Abrahamic obedience. The life of Isaac, unlike the other Patriarchs, is depicted not as a struggle for security or survival, but as enjoyment of blessings without moving anywhere away from the Promised Land. Isaac is the only patriarch who is stationed in that land without moving away. Episodes such as Abraham`s departure from Canaan to escape death from starvation or Jacob`s journey to Haran for a wife, involving years of hard labor and conflict, serve to highlight Isaac`s simple and tranquil life. The story of Isaac is short simply because a blessed life has much less to tell. Thus, the Isaac story illustrates the ideal life and demonstrates the relationship between obedience and blessing in the promised land.
