This study is a critical reading of the religious thought of Ryu Yong-mo(1890-1981) a Korean Protestant in relation with the matter of formating identity in the colonial context of early modern Korea. Witnessing the end of his nation and experiencing Japanese imperialism, Ryu questioned both personal and national identity that could make Koreans survive despite the absence of external independent institutions. Unlike other nationalistic intellectuals who found in Protestantism the institutional power to modernize and strengthen Korea, Ryu saw the universal dimension of Protestant belief in Christ, which he calls ``Olna`` the spirit-self. ``Olna``, to Ryu, is an independent, free, and equal subject who possesses divine quality(song) originated from God. ``Olna`` is also a communal being who is ontologically connected to and interacts with God, “emptiness”(mu) in Ryu`s use of the term. Ryu`s idea of ``Olna`` was grounded on his Christian belief in human nature and the modern concept of individual self. It had been deepened, however, through his further readings of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian texts. In concluding part, this research examines a possibility for Ryu`s thought of Olna to become a social teaching to transcend three kinds of particularism, that is, imperialism, colonialism, and nationalism.
