The number of Koreans visiting China has seen a significant rise since the re-opening of the diplomatic ties in the early 1990s, and tourism occupies an increasingly important position in this new movement. The earliest wave of Korean tourism to China centers around historic and national tourism in search of the sacred Mount Paekdu of the Korean nation, the remains of Kokuryo and Palhae, the ancient kingdoms of Korea and also the visits to the sites of anti-Japanese struggles during the colonial period. While the three northeastern provinces of China, Liaoning, Jilin and Heilungjiang where still a large number of Korean Chinese are concentrated render a particular historical significance to Koreans, travel to these places had been forbidden to Koreans following the political developments of the post-war era including the division of Korea and the establishment of a Socialist regime in China. The opportunities to travel to these historic land are thus most enthusiastically embraced by Koreans once they are opened to the public into the 1990s. The Korean enthusiasm for their long-forgotten historic sites that now fall into the Chinese sovereignty, however, soon attracted sensitive attention of Chinese authorities and led to a series of new control and surveillance measures from the latter including the formulation of what is known as the Northeast Project. This paper attempts to analyse firstly, 1) the process of reconstructing historic sites in Northeast China and transforming them into tourist destinations; secondly, 2) the contesting interests and understanding of the Koreans, the Chinese and the Korean-Chinese surrounding the process; and finally, 3) the meaning of history making and its tourist consumption in the region.
