The purpose of the paper is to understand the technical behavioral features of Korean potters` wheel-based forming process using an operational sequence analysis. To this end, field work was carried out to collect ethnographic material on coiling and slabing techniques. The analysis revealed the following: First, their technical behaviors are related to technical traditions that influenced techniques for transforming clay, strategies in technical choices, and the methods by which tools are used. Second, they transform the pottery through each stage of the making process in correlation to a chain reaction of raw materials, manufacturing tools, and technical gestures. Third, there exists a ``technization of the body`` through interactions between their technical gestures, the recognition process for the manufacturing tools, and the raw materials. In particular, there are four commonly identified basic procedures for pottery shaping: coiling or slab building, paddling, and scraping; however, these techniques have been transformed by regional potters. Forth, the sequential order in the forming process plays a cardinal role in making the bottom, body, and top of the pottery. There also exists cyclicality in the operation process; after considering their technical habitudes, production methods, and production capability, they may integrate new technology. Fifth, the potters manufacture the pottery through the compromised choice of habitus, new technologies, and distinct methods according to their aims while still accepting changes in the technical environment.
