This article examines how John Donne reflects on the diverse aspects of vicissitudes in Devotions upon Emergent Occasions II. A number of textual passages enumerate the author’s contemplations into changeability of the world in general and his personal life in particular. Through the structure of “Meditation,” “Expostulation,” and “Prayer,” he investigates the thematic concerns with capriciousness, the ironic boundaries of human competence, and his spiritual enlivening into the perpetual presence and working of the Almighty, which remains beyond the mutable realm of human affairs and enterprises.
