This study analyzes one of John Donne’s Holy Sonnets, “Hymn to God, My God, in My Sickness,” with a focus on the subject of death and his ambivalent thoughts about it. Donne is believed to be obsessed with death, fearing it as a result of sin on the one hand, while accepting it as a door to salvation on the other. Going through both spiritual and physical sufferings on his deathbed, Donne comes to a conclusion that the purified soul would be united with the body at the end of journey. All his theological knowledge becomes melted in the concept of death, making it an aesthetic and metaphysical object for literary art. This is an unprecedented spiritual exercise for Donne’s peace of mind in the face of death, the most dreadful enemy of humanity.
