This study examines the relationship between television talk show viewing and political trust, and further investigates how political ideology moderates this relationship. Specifically, we focus on incivility in talk show content and its implications for the democratic process. Our national survey data reveal that talk show viewing is positively related to political trust, consistent with the effects of news use. However, the pattern of the relationship differs depending on individuals’ political ideology. Findings of the interaction effects indicate that the relationship between talk show viewing and political trust is weaker among those who are conservative than their liberal counterparts. Further, data also suggest that talk show viewing discourages citizens’ healthy criticism of the government and its policies. Implications for research on entertainment media contents and political trust are discussed.
