Literature is the art of language. Throughout the ages, all the excellent writers around the world are committed to pursuing the unique, amazing and even “astonishing” of literary language through a variety of different ways. In Chinese contemporary literature, Wang Shuo is one of the few “astonishing” novelists. Wang Shuo’s novel is mainly to write about a bunch of cultural rascals, taking the game-like way of life and decadence as their spiritual integrated into the content of his novels.
Wang Shuo immerses in his novels. In his free novel world, he shows the interests and impulses of arbitrarily using, controlling and recombining the words. He never hides his strong desire to show this ability in his works. Wang Shuo has a talent in writing. In his verbal repertoire, there are lots of words, sentences, slangs, metaphors and other language materials which come from common life, books or his inspiration. Like a leader in his own world, Wang Shuo maximizes the use of these language materials. When we read his novel, sometimes we feel that the existence of the characters in the books is just for the novel language. Wang Shuo’s language feature is so unique and we can feel his great ability to control the words through the lines of his works.
This thesis, based on three Wang Shuo’s novels published in 1990s, 《ferocious animal》, 《Die Satisfied》 and 《Xu Ye》. Balance with his other works, the thesis analyzes the following aspects of Wang Shuo’s language features: the strange words collocation and reduplication, the use of the northern dialect and Beijing catchwords, ridicule and irony in Wang Shuo’s language, special sentence patterns of long attributive and punctuations omitted, extraordinary metaphors and other aspects of Wang Shuo’s language features.
