This research aims to investigate the characteristics of ‘Gyuri-Jaenggi’ and ‘SomonenSori’ in Hong-cheon area, Gangwon-do, South Korea. ‘Gyuri-jaenggi’ is a form of tillage tool in mountainous counties in Gangwon-do. The plow(‘jaenggi’ in Korean) is one of the earliest agricultural tools, run by the external power other than human labor. Putting a plow onto one single cow is termed by ‘Hori,’ and putting it onto a couple of cows is termed by ‘Gyuri.’ ‘Gyuri’ is generally practiced to plow rice paddies and farming fields in North Korea and some areas in Gangwon-do, South Korea.
Like people’s saying, “Not every cow can plow. Only the trained cows for many days by skillful farmers can”, the efficiency of plowing is up to deep and mutual understanding between the towing cows and tiller. Particularly in Gyuri-jaenggi plowing, this mutual understanding among the tiller and towing cows is almost everything regarding plow tillage.
It is often said that clever cows plow on their own, making goose of the clumsy tiller. The mutual understanding and communication between cows are, above all, one of the most important components in plowing paddies and fields well. In a word, the best tillers are not simply good at handling plows: it is also about how well he can keep in tune with towing cows. Characteristic tunes are left as the farming folk songs of Gangwon-do. When the tiller is plowing, he commands the livestock with melodic remarks rather than dialogic commands. The tiller utters the syllables longer or shorter in tunes, then the series of remarks almost sound like a folk song. This series of melodic orders, which vary from person to person and from area to area, enriched Gangwon-do’s folk songs. It is apt to cultivate barren and inclined grounds, and it is more than a merely peculiar farming tool for wild rice paddies and farming fields. ‘Gyuri-jaenggi’, rather, is the collective construction of the local culture. ‘Gyuri-jaenggi’ is a complex the regional environment, topography, geological features, the lives of cattle and people, the way that livestock and people have had their reciprocal relationship, people’s social relations, and their outlook on the world.
