In historical studies of the Korean ancient periods, the fashion of agricultural production that used cows (“Wu-gyeong”) is cited as one of the most important elements that enabled socio-economic changes during the Three dynasties period. This cow-using fashion of agriculture is also considered what triggered (or at least to a certain extent connected with) the dismantling of “Eubrak” village communities and the formation of small-sized peasantry operations. Yet insufficient amount of records have always prevented us from finding out exactly in what fashion this Wu-gyeong practice would have been employed, and exactly what kind of socio-economic changes it actually brought about. There have only been speculations.
Then, among many concepts that have usually been uttered in defining the nature of Wu-gyeong, there is the issue of ‘Gyeori,’ which refers to a practice using two cows as a pair in plowing the fields. In the Northern regions of the Korean peninsula, including the realms that belonged to Goguryeo, this Gyeori practice seems to have been used for a long time. But strangely enough, previous studies of Wu-gyeong never sufficiently mentioned or chose to examine this particular practice. Therefore in this article, several studies in the area of Folklore that has dealt with this Gyeori practice in particular are respectfully consulted, in an attempt to gain understanding of the range of changes that would have been caused by this Wu-gyeong practice of Goguryeo, which does not seem, at least according to an examination conducted here in this article, to have been a variable that actually enabled the formation of smallsized peasantry operations or elevated the level of their independent nature.
