This study analyzes how religious factors affect the attitudes associated with the sexuality and the family. The data of this study arise from the “Survey of Religion and Social Progress” which was carried out in 2014 with research from part of “Religion and Social Progress” since 2012 as a part of “Social Sciences Korea” (SSK).
To summarize the analysis of the survey results: 1) Religious factors had significant effect on the attitude towards homosexuality, divorce and extramarital sex (the first type variable), but on the attitude towards the adoption and single mothers (the second type variable) had no significant effect. 2) In case of the first type variable, only Protestantism among confessions influenced them at a significant level. However, these significant effects disappeared except for homosexuality, if faith strength was included in the analysis(Model 2). 3) Homosexuality had the highest determinant coefficient (R2), which means that it was most affected by the religious factors. And finally, 4) the stronger faith strength is, the more conservative attitudes have shown. (Even though we could not see directly from the analysis,) variables such as the fundamentalistic extent of confession and religious rites participation seems to have an influence on the above-mentioned impacts of religious factors.
In addition to religious factors, age and newspaper preference had a significant impact on all measurements of variables, In other words, the higher the age, the more conservative type was preferred, the more conservative sexuality-and family-related attitudes have shown. Sex variable had a significant impact on only the first type variable same as religious variable, and men had more conservative attitudes towards homosexuality and divorce, women were more negative with respect to extramarital sex. Gender differences was maintained at a statistically significant level also in the analysis-model inclusive of faith strength(Model 2), except for homosexuality.
