Cries and laments are very important motives of the biblical story of salvation. When the Hebrew people cried and lamented, God listened to their groaning, he came down to them and saved them from their slavery. When the Israel people were in captivity in Babylon, they cried out to God, and lamented. It became a ‘lament festival’(Klagefeier), and the Babylonian authorities prohibited it. They overcame the pain of their captivity through such a lament festival, and finally they were able to return to Jerusalem.
Jesus listened to the cries of the little people of Galilee, helped them, healed them and encouraged them. “Talitha, koum”(Little girl, I tell you to get up!), “Ephphatha”(Open up), “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?”(My God, my God, why did you abandon me?), these words are Jesus’ shouting and cries that respond to their cries. And Jesus’ cries continue through the “Unspeakable groaning of the Spirit”(Romans 8:26). The Spirit listens to the groaning and moaning of the little people and the groans of creation. Tongues are an example of such unspeakable groaning, the groaning of the Spirit.
The Korean Christian Church prayed in cries and laments during the Japanese colonial period, and contributed to the liberation of the nation. Since the 1970s, however, the Korean Christian Church was focused on the growth of the church itself, and ignored social grief and suffering. Today the Korean Christian Church must lament and mourn with the social grief and suffering coming from such catastrophes as the Ssangyong Motor events, Saewolho disasters etc., and must sublimate them into a church’s lament and prayer.
