This study pays attention to the cultural aspect of translation, which has been used as the channel of colonization or that of post-colonization. Chapter II explores the ideology discovered in the process of cultural translation. In particular, the chapter examines how cultural translation might implant distorted images of other cultures, through the issues raised by Edward W. Said and Chinua Achebe. The emphasis of this study is to point out the colonial obsession that one should translate other cultures from the perspective of one’s own culture. This chapter considers J. M. Coetzee’s Foe as a novel that excellently deals with this issue.
Chapter III investigates ‘untranslatability.’ When translators come across the untranslatability of other cultures in the translation process, the result of translation completely differs according to the attitude with which the translators face the untranslatability and their perception of it. In contrast to colonialists’ sense of superiority about ‘the translatable,’ the concept of untranslatability of ‘the untranslatable’ is paradoxically important in that it is a thoughtful and positive gesture approaching translatability.
