This paper aims to examine the meaning of Iago Prytherch in the poetry of R. S. Thomas. Thomas tries to write about Welsh people, particularly Welsh peasants in connection with nature, in his early poetry. Thomas’s creation of Iago Prytherch is one of his efforts to describe the peasants more objectively. He seems to be disappointed at Prytherch who is beast-like and a lack of knowledge. However, Thomas warns the civilized people of the destructibility of the modern technological civilization. In fact, Prytherch as a peasant with “mute beast-like endurance” is regenerated into a farmer with holiness in contrast to the urban civilization. Although Prytherch is thought to have been idiotic or barbaric by contemporary people, Thomas emphasizes Prytherch is actually the last winner of this generation, who has a tree’s patience, rooted in a dark soil.
