This paper aims to examine the poet, R. S. Thomas"s attitude and values through his poetry, which argues for using Welsh to defend Wales" identity and rejecting modern civilization. Though Thomas is a priest of the Anglican Church, he seeks to preserve the nature, the unique culture and identity of Wales, by revitalizing the language of Wales and by opposing the industrialization. He considers the language of a nation as the identity of a nation and machine civilization as violating human dignity. That’s why Thomas cherishes Welsh as the most important thing to defend Wales and tries to maintain it as the national language. He also has a strong sense of disgust and resentment that he regards the mechanical civilization of England as eroding the pure nature of Wales and the minds of farmers. Thomas"s wish is to inherit the beautiful nature and unique culture that Wales enjoyed in the past when it was abundant, not for Wales to be a dependency of modern civilization.
