The purpose of this essay is to chart the impact of the racism on the 21st-century reader, who, on the whole, is forced into a position of resistance. Two recent critics disagree regarding whether Wait’s portrayal is racially representative. This article argues that Wait is a racist archetype. From the very first moment, the reader is exposed to the racism of the omniscient narrator in terms of the difference of languages spoken by the denizens of India and those of the British sailors. But the main racist ideology that the reader experiences is through the crew’s and the officers’ reaction to Wait, who is especially contrasted with his white peers during the storm scene. The reader is invited to view him prejudicially as an emasculated, helpless black man. He is primarily a heathen. Critically, Wait is cast as the villain of the ship, causing the mutiny, endangering the ship’s discipline and order. The reader is compelled to view Wait as the “hateful” and “unfair” burden. By his racist portrayal of Wait, Conrad justifies symbolically the white man’s superior place in the world.
