The movement of characters is one of the crucial elements to deliver their emotion flowing inside. Though it is the same movement, it may appear or be expressed differently according to the character’s personality or emotion or the particular situation. The purpose of this study is to analyze not only the movement found superficially in an animation but also a character’s internal emotion and attitude with Laban’s movement analysis system, particularly effort, one of its analysis categories, and examine how effectively Laban’s movement analysis often employed at the circles of dance can analyze movement in an animation.
<Monster University> is about a monster that constantly makes efforts to realize its dream to be a scarer. Functional movement forms the most part, but expressive movement to show how a character thinks or feels also appears harmoniously. Characters’ externally shown movement can express their internal emotion properly sometimes, but they also often move expressing their feelings in moderation. Therefore, this study analyzes the movement of characters found in the four scenes of <Monster University> with LMA’s effort. According to the findings, at the scene where Michael enters the door leading to the human world following the scarer, the emotional state of Michael envious of the scarer is expressed with the Vision Drive giving the strong feel of dreaming. At the scene of the second game to choose the best scare team, it shows us the Spell Drive with its careful and light movement having clear intention to survive at the game. At the scene where there is a party held for the teams that have survived, it shows the Passion Drive of being eagerly expressing happy and delightful feelings without considering what is around. At the scene where Michael and Sullivan are pursued by people, the Action Drive was used to express movement that was heavy and strong and was getting faster gradually by focusing the feelings of the characters in haste into one place.

캐릭터의 움직임은 내면에 흐르는 감정을 전달하기 위한 중요한 요소이다. 비록 동일한 움직임일지라도 캐릭터의 성격이나 감정 또는 상황에 따라 움직임은 다르게 나타나고 표현된다. 이 연구에서는 라반의 움직임 분석 체계인 Laban Movement Analysis(LMA)를 사용하여 겉으로만 보여지는 애니메이션의 움직임뿐만 아니라 캐릭터의 내적인 감정과 태도를 라반의 움직임 분석(LMA) 카테고리의 하나인 에포트(Effort)로 분석하여, 주로 무용계에서 활용되는 라반의 움직임 분석이 애니메이션의 움직임을 얼마나 효과적으로 분석할 수 있는 가를 알아보고자 한다.
<몬스터대학교>는 겁주기 선수가 되고자 하는 꿈을 위해 끊임없이 노력하는 몬스터에 대한 이야기로, 기능적 움직임이 주를 이루지만 캐릭터의 생각과 감정을 표현하는 표현적 움직임도 조화롭게 나타난다. 겉으로 드러난 캐릭터의 움직임은 자신의 내면적인 감정을 잘 드러내는 경우도 있지만 감정을 절제하면서 움직이는 경우도 많다. 그러한 점에서 이 연구는 <몬스터대학교>를 연구대상으로 삼고 <몬스터대학교>의 네 가지 장면에 나타난 캐릭터의 움직임을 LMA의 에포트로 분석하였다. 연구결과, 마이클이 겁주기 선수를 따라 인간 세상과 연결된 문 안으로 들어가는 장면에서는 겁주기 선수를 부러워하는 마이클의 내면에 깔려있는 감정 상태를 꿈꾸는 것 같은 강한 느낌을 주는 환상충동(Vision Drive)으로 표현하고 있으며, 최고의 겁주기 팀을 선정하는 시합 중 두 번째 경기를 하는 장면에서는 경기에서 살아남으려는 확실한 움직임의 동기를 가지고 조심스럽고 가볍게 움직이는 마술충동(Spell Drive)을 느낄 수 있었다. 생존한 팀들을 위한 파티가 열리는 장면에서는 주위를 의식하지 않고 기쁘고 즐거운 감정표현에 집중하는 열정충동(Passion Drive)이 나타나며, 마이클과 설리반이 사람들에게 쫓기는 장면에서는 긴박한 캐릭터들의 내적인 감정을 한 곳에 집중시켜 점차적으로 빨라지는 동작과 무겁고 강한 움직임을 표현하는 동작충동(Action Drive)이 나타남을 알 수 있었다.
