This study conducted a multilevel analysis that statistically estimated the effects of relationships with neighbors on depressive symptoms at both individual and community levels. 2012 Korean General Social Survey was analyzed in combination with goon/goo-level regional data. The effects of neighborhood network size and perceptions on neighborhood were estimated at the individual level and population density at the neighborhood level. The neighborhood perception was measured by two separate dimensions: collective ability to overcome neighborhood problems and intimacy among neighbors. First, the absence of neighborhood networks increased depressive symptoms. Second, while the high collective capability decreased depressive symptoms, the stronger intimacy rather increased the symptoms. Third at the community level, the population density increased depressive symptoms. Finally, the interactions between individual and community level showed that population density reinforced the negative effect of collective ability while ameliorating the positive effect of neighbors" intimacy on depressive symptoms. These results indicate that stronger relationships with neighbors, whether collective capability or intimacy, operate in a more positive way for mental health if a community has higher density. In other words, personal relationships tend to be fragmented in dense areas and high quality-relationship with neighbors is increasingly important for mental health.
