This objectives of our study are summarized as the following. First, we investigate the factors that constitute the design management competence of a firm. Second, we want to find out the differences in organizational characteristics between the two groups of firms, one group with high and the other with low design management competence. Third, we analyze the internal factors of a firm that have an impact on design management competence. Based on the survey data collected from 441 Korean companies, the factors are derived that constitute design management competence of firms. Also, differences in firm characteristics, attitudes and behaviors of top managers, and various design management activities are analyzed between the two firm groups - the high and the low group in terms of design management competence. The findings of our research are summarized as the followings. First, design management competence are categorized into three factors: (1) operations and processes improvement competence, (2) market creation and retention competence, and (3) strategic core competence. These three factors are highly interdependent rather than independent. Second, the typical characteristics of the firms with a high level of design management competence are as follows. (1) Firms with the high level of design management competence are more likely to have separate design department, higher management positions in design function, better the quantity and the quality of designers, and are involved in more active human networks inside and outside the company. Third, top managers in firms with a high level of design management competence are more likely to recognize the strategic importance of design, disseminate it among the employees, make an effort to develop talented designers in the firm, and respect the opinion of the designers when making strategic decisions. Fourth, the regression analyses of the factors that have an impact on design management competence are as follows. Firms have a high level of design management competence when top managers are interested in and in support of design issues. critical design decisions are made by design managers than by the top managers, and designers discuss on the management issues with the managers of other departments.
