The goal of this article is to study woman in Gnosticism. The references for woman in Gnostic tradition consist principally of two : ① documents from the antiheretical writers of early Christian church, ② primary sources such as the writings of Nag Hammadi Library which are attributed to ancient ‘gonsitcs’ or associated with ‘gnostic’ themes. Before the discovery Nag Hammadi library in 1945, our knowledge of gnostic traditions derived almost exclusively from the reports of the antiheretical writers of early Christian churches. With the discovery Nag Hammadi library, there have been big progress on the studies on Gnosticism.
I have found that Gnostic texts and traditions use images of gender as they present their varied and complex religious perspectives. It is because these provided a particularly apt and rich set of metaphors for reflection on a variety of issues, particularly those involving differentiation, unity, or both. Among the sources, I only focused on gender imagery and role of woman in Gnostic communities.
The reports of antiheretical writers provided wide range of gnostic representation of woman and female gender. However because of their polemical tendency to exaggerate and misread gnostic traditions, the antiheretical sources can only used to criticize and ridicule their female metaphors and imageries of God. Primary sources of Gnosticism provide more accurate and persuasive account of woman and gender in gnostic traditions. Female characters in these texts are depicted in three categories : divine beings such as ① Sophia, Siege or Zoe; ② mythic women of primodial time such as Eve, Norea; ③ women of more recent historical times such as Jesus’ disciples Mary Magdalene, Salome, and Martha. I have argued that gnostic texts provide positive female imagery and prominent social roles for women. In gnostic texts, female metaphors were representation of redemptive state, women were depicted as ideal disciples.
