Momentum announced the opening of the fully-fledged TV broadcasting era in Korea with the test broadcast of KBS TV in December 24, 1961, the so-called “Christmas gifts 5.16” of the military regime, and the television boom began. In the 1960’s, a TV was still the only item owned by a handful of the ‘privileged’, but it was the number one thing people wanted to have.
The 1960s was the ‘radio era’; the 1970s was ‘the era of television’. Since 1975, television ownership rapidly increased and it began to exert a strong inuence on people’s daily lives. In the 1960s, television was considered a ‘strange thing’. In the 1970s, it governed the daily rhythm of people’s lives and formed a major part of a strong consumer culture. The way of public communication since the television age has changed from logic driven by emotion.
In the 1970s and 80s, television was used as a means of promoting the ruling regime which completely dominated the broadcasting media. But the public was not only getting the television controlled by the ruling regime. They also enjoyed watching popular drama and entertainment programs, a culture that was contrary to the norms required by the government. Although intellectuals denounced such programs as “vulgar mass culture”, the new mass culture was mediated by the TV and it had the potential to act as resistant to dominant discourse and cultural structures mediating the ‘pleasure’.
