Environmental-friendly design paradigm has been constantly evolving in keeping with the needs of our society. In collaboration, diversified researches on the subject of sustainable design are expanding their parameters relating to our environment in addition to aspects in social and economic affairs. This practice of conserving the precious resources and heightening energy efficiency is especially indispensable in the structures of fashion industry, where masses of fast-coming new products are being manufactured in excess in keeping with the fast changing trends.
The objective of the research is to apply the key elements of sustainable design to the development of fashion design products by thoroughly studying the transformation of environmental-friendly design paradigms and exploring how they’ve been applied to the domain of fashion. The elements of sustainable designing were established by studying literature including prominent foreign and domestic publications in the field and previous researches, and well-founded online design websites. Sustainable fashion design products were developed based on case studies by element. As for the progression of the study, the researcher: 1) Studied the concept of sustainable design and change in environmental-friendly design paradigms basing on previous researches and theoretical data, and instituted 6 elements of sustainable designing, 2) Conducted case studies on each of the 6 elements (design through upcycling, design with emotional connectivity, design of extensive applications, design promoting slow fashion, design with minimized waste, and design employing alternative material), and 3) Developed a fashion product exploiting 4 of the 6 elements, i.e. design through upcycling, design promoting slow fashion, design with minimized waste, and design employing alternative material. The process of making a tote bag using fabric made from plastic bag waste incorporates the design through upcycling which adds a new value to waste material, and the use of plastic bag features design employing alternative material. Also utilizing the traditional craftsmanship of weaving encompasses design promoting slow fashion.
Sustainable design is not just a considerate movement for the gradually degenerating natural environment, but has become an imperative paradigm in many areas of human society. This research does not merely stop at the pondering, but promotes consumer interest on sustainable design and puts forward a comprehensive guidance in regard to the social role of design by applying the concept on actual designing and developing practical fashion product design with high added value.

친환경 디자인 패러다임은 우리 사회에서 계속해서 변화하고 발전되고 있으며, 환경을 고려하는 것에서 시작하여 사회적, 경제적 측면까지 고려하는 지속가능한 디자인에 대한 연구 또한 더욱더 확산되어가고 있다. 특히 빠르게 변화하는 트렌드에 맞추어 수많은 새로운 제품을 생산하는 패션 산업의 구조 속에서 자원을 절약하고 에너지 효율을 높이는 것으로써 미래 환경을 고려하는 지속가능한 디자인의 필요성은 더욱 커져가고 있다.
본 연구에서는 시대에 따른 친환경 디자인의 패러다임의 변화를 살펴보고, 최근 시대적 흐름에 맞춰 등장한 지속가능한 디자인이 패션디자인의 영역에서 어떻게 적용되어지고 있는지에 대한 분석을 통해 지속가능한 패션디자인 제품 개발에 적용하는 것에 목적이 있다. 연구방법으로는 국내외 전문서적과 선행 논문연구 등을 통한 문헌연구와 인터넷 디자인사이트를 통해 지속가능디자인의 요소를 정립하였고, 요소별 사례연구를 바탕으로 지속가능한 패션디자인제품을 개발하였다. 연구의 내용은 첫째, 선행연구와 이론적 자료를 바탕으로 친환경 디자인 패러다임의 변화와 지속가능디자인의 개념을 살펴보고, 지속가능디자인의 요소를 6가지로 정립하였다. 둘째, 연구자가 재정립한 지속가능디자인의 6가지 요소(업사이클링을 통한 디자인, 감성적 연결성을 가진 디자인, 다양한 활용이 가능한 디자인, 슬로우 패션을 지향하는 디자인, 쓰레기 발생을 최소화한 디자인, 대안적 소재가 적용된 디자인)를 기준으로 요소별 사례조사를 하였다. 셋째, 본 연구자가 재 정립한 지속가능디자인의 요소 중 업사이클링을 통한 디자인, 슬로우 패션을 지향하는 디자인, 쓰레기의 최소화, 새로운 소재의 사용을 통한 대안 제시 항목을 포함한 패션제품을 개발하였다. 버려진 비닐봉지를 사용하여 제직된 원단을 사용하여 토트백을 만드는 과정은 버려진 소재에 새로운 가치를 더해주는 업사이클링을 통한 디자인에 가장 잘 부합하며 비닐봉지를 가공하여 새로운 실의 형태를 제시하는 것으로 대인적 소재가 적용된 디자인이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 전통적인 공예기법인 직조를 사용하여 슬로우 패션을 지향하는 디자인 요소도 포함하고 있다.
지속가능디자인은 점차 악화되어지고 있는 자연환경에 대한 고려 뿐 아니라 인간사회의 여러 분야에 있어서도 꼭 필요한 시대적 패러다임이 되었다. 본 연구는 이를 단순히 이론적인 고찰에 그치는 것이 아니라 실제 디자인에 적용하여 실용적이며 부가가치가 높은 패션제품디자인을 개발함으로써 지속가능디자인에 대한 소비자의 관심을 증가시키고, 디자인의 사회적인 역할에 대한 구체적인 방향을 제시한다.
