This research examines the important characteristics of thoughts demonstrated the poems of Kim Suyoung in regard to ‘Femininity’. In general, Kim Suyoung’s poems are known to express male-centric thoughts which lead to negative expressions towards ‘Females’. However, it is only the characteristic demonstrated from the expressive aspect. The thoughts demonstrated in Kim Suyoung’s poems are closely related to femininity.
‘Femininity’, unlike modern thoughts based on dichotomy, aims for unity between opposites. This type of ‘Femininity’ is related to the characteristics of ‘Sorrow’ in Kim, Suyoung’s poems. Kim Suyoung’s ‘Sorrow’ is originated from the situation where ’Ideality’ is not achieved when ‘Reality’ is in conflict with ‘Ideality’. However, as demonstrated in Female, Day of confidence, Kim Suyoung not only pursued for ‘Ideality’ by escaping from ‘Reality’ and he also did not settle for ‘Reality’ by giving up ‘Ideality’. Kim Suyoung gains the power to advance forwards the poetic direction in the coexistence between ‘Reality’ and ‘Ideality’ and the tension between these two concepts. Therefore, ‘Sorrow’ demonstrated in Kim Suyoung’s poems is not the emotion originated from ideality being frustrated by reality, but originated from the coexistence between ‘Reality’ and ‘Ideality’. Kim Suyoung affirms ‘Unity between opposites’, thus ‘Sorrow’ itself can be affirmed as well.
This seems to be closely linked to the characteristics of thoughts demonstrated in poems and prose written by Kim Suyoung. His thoughts not only adhere to one direction but are open to many opportunities which is led to affirmation towards ‘Ambiguity’. This ambiguity seems to be also closely related to ‘Unity between opposites’.
