This paper seeks to examine the literary function and role of the penitential prayers in the Apocalyptic Literature of the Second Temple Period. For this purpose, this paper focuses on the texts of Isaiah 63:7–64:11 and Daniel 9:3–19. This study presents that the two texts are not another kind of lament psalms but rather clearly, penitential prayers. Isaiah 63:7–64:11 has a concrete and long confession of sin, which provokes the need for defining this text as a penitential prayer rather than simply lament. Likewise, Daniel 9:3–19 has a long confession of sin. Isaiah’s penitential prayer has a sharp recognition of its contemporary situation as a crisis in which the community experience the “absence of God” and as a result, they would be in the crisis of being swept away because of their sins. In the face of this crisis, Isaiah’s penitential prayer confesses that “one that you would rend the heavens and come down”(63:19) is the one who resolves the crisis. Daniel’s penitential prayer recalls Jeremiah’s prophecy of a 70–year exile, but confronts the situation that Jerusalem and its Temple were again devastated by Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Daniel presents the apocalyptic expectation that his community could only be delivered by direct intervention of God, which is reveled by the interpretation of Gabriel the angel.
