In languages, every word has a stressed syllable, and stresses in words are determined by several factors such as delimitative and rhythmical property in addition to syllable weight. This study was intended to explain the secondary stress in English by means of a unified constraint-based Optimality Theory, which emphasizes the surface form and constraint interaction. There are two kinds of secondary stresses, cyclic and noncyclic. In an attempt to dispute other theories, I contemplated the probability to accept the concept of the base as the morphological unit. I integrated cyclic and noncyclic secondary stresses, and explained them by a unique constraint hierarchy. Eventually, I managed to propose a unified constraint ranking schema to explain secondary stresses in English. Especially, I could successfully revise the Weight-to-Stress Principle constraint and allow to have an exception clause for schwa vowels, universally unstressed. Finally, I proposed the following constraint hierarchy. FOOT FORM (FT-BIN, TROCH) ≫ PARSE-σ ≫ RWSP ≫ *C-H ≫ BASE-ID (STRESS, VOWEL) ≫ ALIGN-L. I concluded this study by discussing limitations of this study and making some suggestions for future research.
