This paper attempts to present a comprehensive treatment of quantifier `some` and `any`. `Some` and `any` have been considered a complementary distribution for long time, and there has been some prejudice about the usage of these qunutifiers. These make it difficult to figure out their meaning and usage. I examined 93 `some` data and 57 `any` data from written and spoken English utterances and compared them with 29 `some` data and 23 `any` data from Korean Middle Scholl English textbooks. It showed that `some` and `any` can not be considered as complementary distribution. They only share the feature [-Specified], and further `some` has the feature of [+Referent, +Disjunctive], `any` has the feature of [-Referent, ±Disjunctive]. `Some` has positive connotation and `any` has negative connotation. Positive connotation of `some` can be extended to the quality of the reference. In some spoken expression, however `some` has negative connotation and `any` has positive connotation. In the range of quantity, `some` covers `one` to `not all` and `any` covers `zero` to `all`. `Some` is based on the real world of reference and its quantity, while `any` is based on the hypothetical world. This feature often makes `some` co-occur with past tense and `any` co-occur with modal. The comparison between English texts and Korean texts shows that Korean texts do not cover several frequently used spoken expressions of `some` and `any`. This fact leads to the over-simplified and over-generated rule application between `some` and `any` in Korean textbooks.
