The concessive subordinate conjunction is one of the devices that form an integral part of the grammar of any language. Since these conjunctions are known to have developed from lexical sources across languages, looking into the process of emergence of such forms constitutes an interesting research topic for grammaticalization. Concessive markers have caught much attention in studies of language change and grammaticalization. Studies by Konig (1986), Traugott and Konig (1988), Chen (2000), and Barth-Weingarten and Couper-Kuhlen (2002) have brought some very interesting findings and hypotheses. Based on the findings by those mentioned, we would like to develop the concessive subordinate conjunctions while and whereas derived from nominal sources in terms of grammaticalization; each concessive marker in question is illustrated for syntactic and semantic changes. This paper also focuses on comparing differences between developments of nominal origin concessives and verbal origin concessives.
