This study investigates how economic entities such as individuals and business organizations form different sentiments for the economic outlook when tone of economic news changes. For this research, the concept of asymmetric effects of the economic information is applied. Specifically, psychological and behavioral responses of economic entities to media are empirically tested according to the entities’ characteristics such as the field of business and political orientation, using time-series data from 1998 to 2014. The results are as follows. First, individuals are more sensitive than organizations to the economic information provided by the media. Second, men and self-employed ones are found to be more sensitive than women and salaried employee respectively, when exposed to economic information. Third, large, domestic-oriented and manufacturing enterprises show a relatively stronger reaction to economic news than small and medium sized, export-oriented and non-manufacturing firms respectively. Fourth, economic entities generally show higher sensitivity to the media tone during economic downturn than during economic upturn. In the period of downturn, individuals are particularly more sensitive than organizations. Fifth, response level of enterprises is highest during Kim Dae-Jung government when harsh structural adjustments were implemented after financial crisis. This study discusses how the economic entities respond differently when they are exposed to economic information via press according to their economic status, economic cycle, and government structure.
