This study attempts to explain that Kim, Jeong-hui’s A Sketch of pine trees on a windy day(A Sketch) is constituted of two parts of different nature in artistic modal kind, a picture and a text, or a textual epilogue and a letter, so that this configuration brings about the rhetorical and aesthetic effects. A Sketch presents the multiple layers of interpretation on account of the self-integration of its textual part, while it had been examined to designate the tradition of oriental painting based on the coherence between painting and calligraphy.
The textual part of A Sketch carries out not only the function as an epilogue belonging to the pictorial part, but also its self-definable mode, the discourse of letter. The quantitative balance between the pictorial part and the textual part turns into the semantic tension: as serving the discursive properties of letter in the textual part to the whole work, it would communicate its significance to that of pictorial part equivalently.
And the rhetorical mode of letter connotes its historical and substantial context of communication on which the meaning of this artistic work stands in reality.
With the close reading, we can find the rhetorical strategy of this letter attempting to go beyond the boundary of artistic modes and criterion regarding to the fixed tradition and norms; between monologue and dialogue, philosophy and art, and experiential subject and ideal world.
