Report Errors

Korean sociology celebrates this year, it"s 70th anniversary. Concentrating it"s focus on the role of Lee Sang-Beck, this article sheds lights on the institutionalization process of sociology in Korea. Lee studied sociology and history in Japan during the colonial period. After liberation, in spite of the presence of several rival sociologists who had been trained in the U. S., Germany, France and Japan, Lee became the main actor in the institutionalization of Korean sociology. This article describes this process and explains his success as the founding father of Korean sociology by four main factors: his non-leftist political position, his active participation at Jindan Hakhoe(Jindan academic circle) which played a central role in the reconstruction of Seoul National University, his sincere academic attitude and his charismatic leadership. Both his achievement in social history and his conception of sociology as an empirical science had been inherited by the next generation of Korean sociologist. Nevertheless Lee"s intellectual legacy produced two side effects: insufficient theoretical reflection and lack of relevance.
