This paper aims to describe the character of the combination of a proper noun for a person’s name and a reference/address noun phrase. The construction in which the proper noun of a person’s name and a reference/address noun phrase are combined was dealt with from a sociolinguistic perspective, and was considered as ‘an adnominal function of noun, a natural phenomenon’ or simply ‘an apposition.’
In this paper, I instituted a concept of ‘apposition’ of 서반석(2012), ‘small phrase’ of 김창섭(2005), and ‘Post-NP word construction’ of 김창섭(2011), and tried to describe the syntactic character of the construction.
First, I divided the functions of the construction as reference representations and address representations, for a construction must have been framed for the function of the whole by priority, rather than the inner structure of the construction.
When the function of construction is address, it has the structure of small phrase, and it is not related to order. But when the function of construction is reference, its structure is related to order. When a proper noun is preceded, the structure of construction is generally small phrase, and it has the appositional structure in some cases. In contrast, when a reference form is preceded, the structure of construction is interpreted as apposition and Post-NP word construction by the condition of definiteness.
