This paper examines the relationship between colonial discourse and gender discourse in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The colonized female body and its political meaning are the focus of this study. In the play, the female body is represented as a virgin land that is colonized. Prospero’s strategy to colonize the new land and its natives is similar to his way of controlling such female characters as Sycorax and Miranda. Sycorax, the original mistress of the new land, is represented as a sexually degenerate female by the colonialist, Prospero. In terms of manipulating ‘Others,’ gender discourse is not significantly different from colonial discourse. Miranda, the object of male desire, is also exploited as virgin land. The chastity of a lady was regarded as a prime feminine virtue in a patriarchal society. Prospero controls Miranda’s desire and keeps an eye on her chastity, and gives her to Ferdinand as a ‘gift.’ Colonial discourse, which is intertwined with gender discourse on the female body in the text, and the political discourse presented in Miranda’s marriage negotiations are the focus of the discussion in this paper.
