Literati Officials(士大夫) played a large role in the development of medicine in the Song dynasty. They put a lot of efforts in collecting and disseminating prescriptions, and in the compilation of prescriptions. Hongshijiyanfang is a representative medical text compiled by Hong Jun who served as Youchengxiang(右丞相) during the Southern Song dynasty. Previous studies on prescriptions exchanges among Literati Officials and the compilation of medical textbook by them mostly focused on a theoretical explanation of the materialization of ‘Wei-min(爲民, for people)’ philosophy. This study attempted to understand the exchanges and compilation of prescriptions among Literati Officials as a process of building their own medical culture and enhancing their (or their families’) authority in the local community. Hong Jun revealed his and his family’s medical capacity by emphasizing the prescriptions and treatment experiences acquired by his family members. They distrust and disregard for “doctors”, they also kept a distance from government medicine. And the place they built for exchanging medical knowledge was localized. In conclusion, they wanted to maintain their social and political influence by building their own medical culture through their local experiences, which consequently led to the development of prescriptions medicine centered on family and general medicine.
