Wu-ran-bun-jae(hereafter Ullambana) is one of the most popular Buddhist rituals and festivals in East Asian tradition. The Ullambana is held annually on the 15th day of the seventh month in lunar calendar to release souls of departed ancestors from purgatory. In the Ullambana Sutra, the Buddha instructs his disciple Mok-ryeon(sk. Maudgalyāyana) on how to obtain liberation for his mother, who had been reborn into a lower realm, by making offerings to the sangha on the 15th day of the seventh month, which is also the day of pravarana, a ceremony performed on the last day of three-month-long summer retreat. While there are different theories on the origin of the Ullambana, this article extrapolated the Indian origination before the Buddhism spread to the East Asia.
Based on the historical texts, almanacs, newspapers, magazines, and anthologies, Chapter 2 illustrated the history of Ullambana in Korea from ancient times to modern day. The earliest extant document showing that the Ullambana was held in Korea is from Goryeo dynasty, however, this article addresses that there is possiblity of Ullambana in Three Kingdoms period inciting Japanese historical texts. The Ullambana was flourished in palaces and Buddhist temples in Goryeo. It was relatively weakened in Joseon dynasty, but it was still popular among ordinary people and was held in temples. Up to the modern day, the Ullambana has been flexibly changed according to the need of the period.
During the Ullambana, there was not only the food offerings, but also the performances. In Korea, the earliest extant example of Mok-ryeon drama(ch. Mulianxi) is from Japanese colonial era. Instead, there was Mok-ryeon opera (ko. Mok-ryeon-gang) tradition, which is in similar form of pansori, in Goryeo, Korea. This article concluded that a form of performance must have been held in Joseon as the tradition of performing arts in the Ullambana was transmitted from Goryeo to modern day in Korea.
