People always have expectations for the advent of new media. At the same time they also have some fear for crisis. The Crisis of literature appears repetitively. New media have threatened literature every time. Media in digital era threatens the tradition of printed literature. However, the history of literature has been maintained by adapting and changing itself to new environment of New Media.
This study tries to look into the development of films to understand the meaning of the present crisis of literature. Though the films have much shorter history than literature. But they are very sensitive for the challenge and change of new media since they were originally the concentration of technologies. The films keep strong presence in spite of competitive media such as TV. The file industry has expanded consistently. The films are able to continue to develop themselves by concerning media environment.
Literature is, and should grope change for new media environment. Though nowaday consumers possess and consume contents individually, they eager to interchange their emotions and reactions collectively. The crisis of literature does not end by arguing the end of printed papers. Anyhow, the media of literature would be changed anywhere. The clue will be found in having concerns for the environment of literature media.

소통에 대한 인류의 욕망은 늘 새로운 미디어를 등장시켰다. 뉴미디어의 등장은 기존의 미디어들이나 예술 장르들에게는 위기에 대한 두려움을 안겨주기도 했다. 문학의 경우에도 마찬가지였다. 문학 위기론은 새로운 미디어의 등장마다 여러 차례 반복하여 등장했다. 특히 디지털 시대의 미디어들은 종이 위의 활자 문학의 전통을 위협하고 있다. 하지만 문학의 역사는 늘 새로운 미디어 환경에 적응하고 변화하며 유지되어 왔다.
뉴미디어의 등장과 기존 예술 장르의 위기가 어떤 의식의 변화와 문화적 변화를 동반해왔는지를 살펴보기 위해, 이 논문은 영화의 위기와 문학의 위기를 함께 살펴보고자 했다. 영화는 문학에 비하여 짧은 역사를 가지고 있지만 본래부터 테크놀로지의 집결체로 출발하였기 때문에 새로운 미디어 환경의 도전과 변화에 민감할 수밖에 없었다. 영화는 텔레비전을 비롯한 수많은 경쟁 미디어들의 등장에도 불구하고 여전히 확고한 입지를 차지하고 있다. 영화는 그 안에 담겨진 영상텍스트 못지않게, 그것을 소비하고 감상하는 미디어 환경에 대해 관심을 기울여왔고, 그 덕분에 영화의 발전이 지속될 수 있었다.
문학도 이제 새로운 미디어 환경에 맞추어 변화를 모색하고 있고, 또 그래야만 한다. 그것은 수용자들의 텍스트 수용 태도를 주목하는 데에서 출발해야 한다. 현재의 문학적 텍스트 수용자, 즉 콘텐츠 소비자는 일상 속에서 콘텐츠를 일시적이고 개인적으로 소유하고 소비하지만, 그 이후 수용 반응과 소비 후 감정은 집단적, 사회적으로 교류하고 공감하려 한다. 문학의 위기는 단지 종이 인쇄물의 종말이 올 것인가의 여부에 대한 논쟁으로 해결되지 않는다. 문학의 미디어는 언제든, 어떻게든 변화하게 되기 마련이다. 우리는 문학을 감상하고 교류하는 제반의 환경, 즉 문학적 미디어 환경에 대한 관심을 높이는 데에서 위기 극복의 단서를 찾아야만 할 것이다.
