The research on Korean picture-books began in 1990 when the western picture-books started to come to Korea. The picture-books before that era could not be investigated due to the lack of evidence. Recently, however, a picture-book The Rabbit and the Monkey was newly discovered, allowing the research of picture-books created during the post-independence era. Drawn by the professional artist Kim Kichang , The Rabbit and the Monkey contains drawing styles and color schemes that mirrors the picture-books of today, and also displays an impressive improvement of style involving text and pictures compared to the older picture-books.
The fairytale The Rabbit and the Monkey was initially part of the children’s magazine Children until the Imperial Japan halted its release. After the independence, the fairytale was shown on the Liberty Newspaper on January 1946, and completed on January 1~8, 1947. The fairytale The Rabbit and the Monkey containing the allegory of post-independence reality and world-peace was remade into a picturebook by Kim Kichang and Kim Yonghwan.
The Eulyoo publishing company during the post-independence era had a leading role in the realm of publishing and selling books to spread the National Enlightenment. The Eulyoo publishing company, centered around Ahyup, cooperated with the professionals of children’s art, research and education, respectively, in order to establish children’s cultural life and children’s culture overall. The book The Rabbit and the Monkey published by Ahyup and the ‘Ahyup Picture-book’ series broadened the genre of Korean picture-books.
While the edition by Kim Yonghwan maintained comic depiction of pictures, the “Liberty News” edition by Kim Kichang includes realistic portrayal of the lyrical background resembling the picture-books of the modern era. Kim Kichang’s paintings, while maintaining the lyrical background, shows unconventional structures and beautiful colors. In terms of color, he mainly utilized the five primary colors to combine the text and pictures to cooperate with each other and to produce lyrical dynamic folktale-like styles.
The picture-book The Rabbit and the Monkey is significant because it is an original work not recreated or copied from a foreign publication. It is also important because it opened up a new era of picture-books. Kim Kichang’s The Rabbit and the Monkey drags the history of the Korean picture-books to the early post-independence era and therefore can be considered a pioneer of the Korean picture-books.
