At present, Korean churches are facing a serious crisis due to various factors such as social, political, cultural, and theological issues as well as many problems within the church. Of course, the Korean church is putting a lot of effort into solving its problems, however, there is some criticism that these solutions are just short term fixes or provisional schemes, which are not based on accurate diagnosis or analysis.
A successful model case of church renewals must be presented for the Korean church to overcome this deep crisis. When we consider the history of the church, it is found that the situation of the German church in the 19th century is fairly similar with the Korean church today. The German church succeeded in overcoming severe social problems through church based diakonia and the Innere Mission Movement, which not only helped them regain social confidence, but also reestablished their image as a healthy church to the people.
There is no doubt that the German church’s ideas on Innere Mission could serve as an epoch-making device for the Korean church, providing a chance for a bright future, and solving the serious problems that Korean churches are now experiencing.
On this point, this thesis would like to investigate the situation of the German church in the 19th century, the method and direction of the Innere Mission of the German church, and the effects of the Innere Mission, and apply their successful tactics to the Korean church so that the Korean church, which is now facing a serious crisis, can overcome the many obstacles disturbing its healthy growth.

한국교회는 선교 초기부터 다양한 사회적 활동을 통하여 민족으로부터 사랑받는 종교로 자리매김할 수 있었다. 특별히 복음과 함께 사회적으로 약자를 돌보는 일과 교회가 사회를 섬기는 일에 최우선으로 매진함으로써 획기적인 성장과 발전을 도모할 수 있었다.
그러나 현금의 한국교회는 사회, 정치, 문화, 신학적 요인 외에도 교회 내부의 문제를 포함한 다양한 문제로 인하여 대단히 어려운 상황에 처해 있다. 또한 이러한 위기 상황 가운데 한국교회는 교회의 지속적인 성장과 발전을 위한 다양한 대안들을 마련하고 있기는 하다. 하지만 이러한 일련의 노력들은 문제에 대한 정확한 진단과 분석 없이 제시된 임시방편적이며 임기웅변적 대책이라는 자성의 목소리가 높다.
한국교회가 현재의 위기를 극복하고 재도약하는 교회가 되기 위해서는 무엇보다 선험적 성공사례, 또는 교회 회복에 대한 성공적인 모델이 제시되어야 한다. 역사적으로 볼 때, 19세기 독일교회가 처한 상황과 작금의 한국교회가 처한 상황이 대단히 유사하다는 것, 그리고 독일교회가 내적선교를 통하여 교회개혁은 물론 사회개혁과 국가개혁의 차원으로 승화함으로써 성장하는 교회로 발돋움했다는 점, 그리고 사회를 섬기는 디아코니아 정신으로 이러한 위기를 극복했다는 점 등이 위기 문제를 해결하기 위하여 몸부림치는 한국교회에 주는 교훈적 함의는 참으로 크다고 하겠다.
현재 위기에 처한 한국교회는 반드시 이 위기를 극복하고 다시 한 번 민족으로부터 신뢰받는 교회, 사회를 섬기는 교회, 그리고 교회 내부의 강력한 개혁운동을 통하여 사회개혁을 이루어 내야만 한다. 만약 한국교회가 현시점에서 교회개혁을 통한 사회개혁의 자리로 나아가지 않는다면 한국교회는 그야말로 존재의 문제를 고려해야 할 상황까지 이르지 않을 수 없게 되는 것이다.
이런 측면에서 19세기 독일교회가 처한 상황, 그리고 독일교회의 내적선교를 통한 교회 회복과 사회개혁의 방편, 그리고 독일교회의 내적선교를 통한 선교적 효과는 충분히 한국교회를 새롭게 할 수 있다는 측면에서 이를 심도 있게 고찰해 볼 필요가 있는 것이다. 이 독일교회의 성공적 교회개혁 및 사회개혁을 연구함으로써 독일교회와 유사한 문제에 봉착해 있는 한국교회의 개혁은 물론 지속적인 한국교회의 성장과 부흥을 촉진해 보려는 것이다.
