The purpose of this paper is to discuss the genre and the central narrative of the movie 〈Bodyguards and Assassins〉that sought the revival of Hong Kong movies through collaboration of China and Hong Kong after Hong Kong’s return to China. This movie contains the narrative that satisfies the political desire of China, ‘Unity of China’, and combination of Hong Kong noir film and the sequence of martial arts, to remind the public of the Chinese tradition, chivalry. This process resulted from imagination of China, ‘Unified China’, and is to mint historical memories needed for the present through reproduction of history.
Cultural text cannot be perfectly free from the influences of the state and the market. China has focused on formation and enhancement of the state-centric ideology by using the culture under socialism, and the market after reformation and opening has come to exert influence different from the past in forming cultural text. However, cultural text is also increasingly intending to advance into the area of mainstream culture and achieve commercial success by recognizing the central politics and marketability of the state and establishing corresponding narrative and form on its own. 〈Bodyguards and Assassins〉 is a Hong Kong movie close to the latter, showing the desire to escape from the cultural recession of Hong Kong and advance into the world through collaboration with China. Thus, this movie that tried to meet the political desire and acquire marketability without authentic contemplation on the history summoned by text has come to eccentrically derail from the grammar of film and lose artistic value.
