This paper aims to analyze the McWorld Expo Keynote Speech given by Steve Jobs (hereafter, ‘McWorld Speech’) on the basis of strategies for persuasive message’s composition, and to explore persuasive effects through various techniques used in this speech. Three strategies utilized are concerned with ‘invention’, ‘style’ and ‘arrangement’, which have been proposed by Aristotle. Most previous domestic and overseas studies regarding S. Jobs, have focused on some limited topics such as ‘innovation’, ‘management philosophy’, ‘legend of creation’, ‘leadership’, etc. based on his life, creativity and "giftedness". However few studies have dealt with his speech and its persuasive strategies. Although this speech was a typical showcase informing about the launch of a new product, the iphone, Jobs planned to move audience’s heart using various persuasive strategies.
Our findings in this study showed that firstly, Jobs started from a cognitive framework (‘invention’) of ‘Apple Inc. is best’ and ‘Apple’s products are best’, which has been reflected well in the McWorld speech through various ‘figures’ like hyperbole, metaphor, simile, etc. Secondly, regarding ‘arrangement’, it is notable that the iphone demo was organized effectively and rhetorical strategies using ‘question’ were used frequently. Thirdly, ‘style’ was studied based on three key concepts ‘ethos’, ‘pathos’, and ‘logos’ and several strategic ways were mobilized.
