This study focuses on Keisei Irozyamisen(けいせい色三味線) which was written by Ezima Kiseki(1666-1735). The work described merchant"s money and the culture of red-light districts, so we can analyze the merchants lifestyles as described in the study.
First of all, Keisei Irozyamisen described the red-light districts as spaces of business, so the merchant lost his money to pay for the prostitutes and the prostitutes wanted to earn money. Certainly, the merchants knew the fact if they went to the red-light districts, they would lose their money. But they were eager for the love affairs with the prostitutes, nonetheless they ran through their fortune. This fact reflects the merchants living in those days dilemma between earning money and desire. And the dilemma of merchants was further discussed in Kiseki"s Choninmono.
So we can understand that Keisei Irozyamisen described not only love affairs but also the merchant’s dilemma. Then we can understand Kiseki"s recognition about the merchant"s life began with the Keisei Irozyamisen.
