This study aims to better understand what and how factors associated with demographic and socio-economic features of Korean people play an important role in determining their expenditures for leisure activities. Unlike most previous studies mainly focusing on respondents’ actual expenditures for a particular leisure activity, we estimated three different Tobit models by way of utilizing actual, desired, and latent expenditures a sour dependent variables. Using national survey data (N=10,030), this study revealed that respondents’ vacation experiences served as a statistically significant predictor which determines their degrees of latent expenditures for leisure activities representing differences between desired and actual expenditures. The amount of latent expenditures, suggesting respondents’ unpaid expenditures for leisure activities, was also closely associated with whether they raise young children and how many hours they work. Furthermore, this study found that respondents’ desired expenditures for leisure activities were significantly related to different demographic factors including age, gender, education level, and household income level as well as socio-economic features such as residence area, labor time per week, and vacation experience. Based on study findings, we provided several useful policy avenues that likely contribute to the improved leisure enjoyment of Korean people.
